Study
title: Understanding the impact of home literacy environment and digital media
on pre-schoolers literacy skills
In
this study you will be asked to complete a questionnaire on home literacy environment and your child will be asked to take part in a short video call assessment with a
researcher and complete a series of online literacy tasks. Results will be used
to better inform the development of early literacy skills
What
is the purpose of the study?
The aim of this study is to better
understand how an home literacy environment and the impact of digital medial may
be important to reading attitudes and letter knowledge.
Who is running this study?
The project is being coordinated by Sydney Pickance at Nottingham Trent
University, who is being supervised by Professor Anna Cunningham at Nottingham
Trent University.
Does
my child have to take part?
Collecting data from you and your child is completely voluntary and will not
take place unless you give your consent.
What
would participation involve?
If you wish you and your child to participate, you will be asked to take part
in a short (10-15 minute) questionnaire and then book a time slot to complete the second half of the study. You will then be sent a link to a video call on Microsoft teams with the lead researcher where you will
have the opportunity to ask any questions about the research and help set up
your child to take part in a video call. During this call you child will be
asked to complete a letter knowledge assessment and a reading attitudes test
which should take approximately 20-30 minutes. The time slots are an hour long this is to give time for any breaks or technological difficulties. Your child is welcome to take as
many breaks as they would like during the tasks, however we only ask you do not
close the browser. All data will be kept securely on an encrypted laptop and
only used for research purposes.
How will you protect my child’s
confidentiality and anonymity?
Data collected from all children will be de-identified. Only the main
researcher and her supervisor will have access to identifiable data. All data
will be kept on an encrypted laptop in a locked filing cabinet. Raw data will
be destroyed upon completion of the project, and all data will be destroyed
upon five years of the publication of the research.
What are the
benefits/risks in taking part?
There are no personal benefits of
having your children take part in the study. However, your child may be
contributing to the design of a novel and potentially important literacy
intervention.
Will
my child be recorded, and how will the recording be used?
Your child will be recorded during
the reading attitudes and letter knowledge tests. The recordings will be
de-identified to ensure anonymity and confidentiality, and listened to only in
order to assess reading attitudes and letter knowledge.
Can I withdraw my child’s data
from the research?
You may decide to withdraw your child’s data from the
research study at any time up to April 2021 . You have the right to ask that any data we have
already collected be withdrawn up until two weeks after taking part in the study.
What happens next?
If you and you child would like to
take part in the research, please complete consent form below.
